St. Simons Island


Fort Frederica National Monument (7.5 Miles)

Three years after founding Georgia in 1733, General James Edward Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica to defend the fledgling colony against a Spanish attack from Florida. Sailing up the Savannah River, they established a settlement on this defensible bluff.  Nice parklike area with the ruins of the Fort and the town with explanations of each area.

Simon’s Lighthouse Museum (12 miles)

The St. Simon’s Lighthouse Museum and the Keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1872 to replace the original lighthouse built in 1810 by James Gould of Massachusetts, the first lighthouse keeper.  It is only one of five surviving light towers in Georgia.  Visitors may climb the 129 steps to the top to experience spectacular views.  The museum includes interactive exhibits, rare artifacts, and period rooms.  It’s located near the village and pier.

Christ Church (7 miles)

Christ Church was established in 1808, however, the building was not erected until 1820. It is one of the oldest churches in Georgia.  The church grounds include a cemetery and is set in tall, mossy grass under towering oak trees.

World War II Home Front Museum (12 miles)

Located near East Beach, at the World War II Home Front Museum you’ll discover Coastal Georgia’s extraordinary contributions to winning WWII.  Test your skills as a plane spotter watching the skies for enemy aircraft, train to direct fighter pilots, or build a Liberty ship to transport supplies at this interactive museum.

Cannon’s Point Preserve (4 miles)

Cannon’s Point Preserve, located on Cannon’s Point Drive, is open to the public Saturday through Monday from 9 am to 3 pm. This preserve has some of the last intact maritime forest on SSI, with over 6 miles of salt marsh, tidal creek and river shore line providing habitat for wildlife such as oysters, birds, fish and manatee.  Here you can go for a nature hike, go for a bike ride, see historic ruins, go birding, find a quiet spot for a picnic, or launch a canoe, paddleboard or kayak (this launch is temporarily closed for repairs).

Frederica Park (4 miles)

A nice community park with the following amenities: multipurpose sport field, dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs, restroom facilities, picnic pavilions, botanical trail, labyrinth, a paved walking trail and a playground.

Neptune Fun Zone Pool

A fun family-focused park near the lighthouse and pier with the following amenities: 2 playgrounds, picnic tables, park benches, the Fun Zone (18 hole miniature golf course and a swimming pool), a Casino Facility (for meetings, weddings, and parties), restrooms and beach access.

Little St. Simons Island (Access via Hampton River Marina 0.2 miles)

Day trips are available including boat transportation to and from the island, a naturalist-guided truck excursion of the island with a perspective of many island habitats, a greater understanding of the mission and vision of conservation management, and a bountiful picnic lunch. The truck is outfitted with comfortable benches.


Hampton Marina (0.2 miles)

The Hampton River Marina is a full-service marine facility located on the Hampton River at the northernmost end of SSI. Their modern, six-acre operation includes comprehensive boater and vessel services, including wet slips, fuel, boat launching, maintenance, ship store, and bait.  See their website for recommendations for adventures from fly fishing and inshore and offshore fishing to kayaking and educational tours.  A broad range of fish are native to the area waters including Sharks, Whiting, Speckled Seatrout, Redfish, Black Drum and others.

Horseback Riding

The Stables at Frederica (6 miles)

Enjoy the beautiful natural setting of Sea Island on horseback when you book a guided tour. The following tours are available:  Beach Rides – a 1 ½ hour trip through the dunes and along the Sea Island beachline; Marsh Rides – a 45 minute ride through the marsh grasses, with the chance to see wild heron, osprey, bald eagles, dolphin and more; Wooded Rides – a 45 minute ride under the majestic live oaks with views of Lake Frederica; Pony Rides – a 20 minute guided pony ride for children between 3 and 10 around their beautiful grounds on the north end of the island.

Jekyll Island – this amazing island has an extremely interesting history, including its founding in 1733, Georgia’s first brewery in 1747, its exclusive private hunting club in 1879, The Jekyll Island Club (  opening in 1888, drafting of the Federal Reserve system in 1910, being part of the nation’s first transcontinental phone call in 1915 and being purchased by the state of Georgia in 1948 and established as a state park. A short drive from St. Simon’s Island, there are many things to do and see as well as some great restaurants.
