Fort Frederica National Monument

Three years after founding Georgia in 1733, General James Edward Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica to defend the fledgling colony against a Spanish attack from Florida. Sailing up the Savannah River, they established a settlement on this defensible bluff.  Nice parklike area with the ruins of the Fort and the town with explanations of each area.

Simon’s Lighthouse Museum

The St. Simon’s Lighthouse Museum and the Keeper’s Dwelling were built in 1872 to replace the original lighthouse built in 1810 by James Gould of Massachusetts, the first lighthouse keeper.  It is only one of five surviving light towers in Georgia.  Visitors may climb the 129 steps to the top to experience spectacular views.  The museum includes interactive exhibits, rare artifacts, and period rooms.  It’s located near the village and pier.

Christ Church

Christ Church was established in 1808, however, the building was not erected until 1820. It is one of the oldest churches in Georgia.  The church grounds include a cemetery and is set in tall, mossy grass under towering oak trees.

World War II Home Front Museum

Located near East Beach, at the World War II Home Front Museum you’ll discover Coastal Georgia’s extraordinary contributions to winning WWII.  Test your skills as a plane spotter watching the skies for enemy aircraft, train to direct fighter pilots, or build a Liberty ship to transport supplies at this interactive museum.

Cannon’s Point Preserve

Cannon’s Point Preserve, located on Cannon’s Point Drive, is open to the public Saturday through Monday from 9 am to 3 pm. This preserve has some of the last intact maritime forest on SSI, with over 6 miles of salt marsh, tidal creek and river shore line providing habitat for wildlife such as oysters, birds, fish and manatee.  Here you can go for a nature hike, go for a bike ride, see historic ruins, go birding, find a quiet spot for a picnic, or launch a canoe, paddleboard or kayak (this launch is temporarily closed for repairs).

A nice community park with the following amenities: multipurpose sport field, dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs, restroom facilities, picnic pavilions, botanical trail, labyrinth, a paved walking trail and a playground.

Neptune Fun Zone Pool

A fun family-focused park near the lighthouse and pier with the following amenities: 2 playgrounds, picnic tables, park benches, the Fun Zone (18 hole miniature golf course and a swimming pool), a Casino Facility (for meetings, weddings, and parties), restrooms and beach access.

Little St. Simons Island

The Hampton River Marina is a full-service marine facility located on the Hampton River at the northernmost end of SSI. Their modern, six-acre operation includes comprehensive boater and vessel services, including wet slips, fuel, boat launching, maintenance, ship store, and bait.  See their website for recommendations for adventures from fly fishing and inshore and offshore fishing to kayaking and educational tours.  A broad range of fish are native to the area waters including Sharks, Whiting, Speckled Seatrout, Redfish, Black Drum and others.
